Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is best practice treatment

for anxiety and mood disorders.

CBT assists people to understand how their thinking and

behaviour can affect how they are feeling.

Example: Joe stands in the long queue at the supermarket. He is

thinking, "Wow that new cashier is doing a great job, especially

as it is so busy".  Joe is feeling calm and positive.

Amy is also in the same queue as Joe. Amy is thinking, if this

cashier doesn't hurry up I am going to scream". Amy is feeling

stressed and agitated.

Jordan is also in the line, although Jordan is feeling stressed as

he is running late to work, he slows his breathing (behaviour)

and this assists him to remain calm.

CBT also helps people to identify unhelpful thinking styles and

core beliefs.

For example, Jack walks into work and Tom did not say hello.

Automatically Jack thinks, "I must have done something to upset

Tom".  Jack has fallen into the unhelpful thinking styles of

Personalisation and Jumping to Conclusions.
